Abstract

This article deals with the tuning of parameters for automatic generation control. A three-area interconnected reheat thermal system with proportional-integral controller is considered. Particle swarm optimization algorithm has been applied to optimize the controller parameters. The effectiveness of a variety of cost functions are considered based on the variation in area control errors and outputs of the controller in all the areas. Cost functions like integral square error, integral time-multiplied square error, integral absolute value of the error and integral time-multiplied absolute value of the error are considered. Performances of optimization algorithms are compared and it was found that proposed algorithm gives better results than traditional control algorithm for the problems of AGC. MATLAB/SIMULINK is used as a simulation tool.
